The Monastery is literally built in the middle of a rock and upon a cave’s entrance. We are not absolutely confident about the Monastery’s foundation date but two likely scenarios are 1212 or 1349. Crossing the bridge, which was once mobile and made the Monastery impregnable, we come across a small iconographic church that is commemorated on the feast day Zoodochos Pigi (i.e. the first Friday after Easter Sunday). This is a one-aisled basilica style Church where the cliff’s natural tip meets the Church’s roof. The ravages of time however are intense. The Church currently numbers four cells. However the natural cave still exists and is encountered in the northern gate of the inner narthex. According to tradition, the name of the Monastery, Kipina, emerged from the gardens once cultivated by monks near the Monastery.
