The Holy Monastery of Vyliza

Starting from the settlement it takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the Monastery. The Monastery is built over the gorge where the three streams of Arachthos meet. The Monastery itself was built in the 11th century although the actual complex dates back to the late 17th century. In one interpretation the Monastery of Vyliza was in Christoi, a neighboring settlement to the Pramanta settlement. Around the XIV century tribes of Macedonian Slavs arrived in Vyliza and destroyed the Monastery. Using the remaining remnants the monks built the Monastery on the site that it is found today. The rare surviving manuscripts found in the Monastery are now preserved in the library. Hence we can understand the Monastery’s significant role in the wider region’s education.
