The Gender

In the hinterland region and community, the family is the basic organizational unit. A gender division of labor is applicable where all members jointly participate in the management of the agricultural and livestock capital. A woman’s position within the unit is special. She is entrusted to look after and manage the family during the long absence of men (e.g. tailors, cheese-makers) than can last up to several months. At the same time she is part of a seasonal but permanent work force of under-employed people (i.e. the processing of wool and fabrics). As far as events of customary or social nature are concerned (e.g. celebrations, festivals) the woman’s role is distinct. Her involvement is determined by a number of rules that also apply in her everyday life. According to the community’s moral code the woman’s presence is forbidden in public places (e.g. squares, cafes, shops). Only men are allowed in public places. The collective ethos is determined by a set of values, norms and appropriate behaviors that are based on established structures. She endorses these by contributing to their sustainability. If the woman behaved differently, she was treated with suspicion and was a threat to the status quo.
