The Brotherhood – An Alternative Family Institution

Brotherhoods and religious ties are, according to Nitsiakos, a different kind of family bond. These non-blood relationships filled the gaps in the community’s social institution and fulfilled the much needed alliances between families. Young people between 15 and 20 years of age would form brotherhoods. A young girl had to be present in order to confirm the act. Once they’d find the girl the priest would position all three of them in front of the Great Gate. The girl stood in the middle and the young men stood around her while holding hands. The priest would loosely tie all three of them with a rope. Then he’d read a blessing that confirmed the bond between them for an entire lifetime. Once the priest untied them the two boys would kiss the young girl. Afterwards, a celebration followed in the home of one of the “brothers” which lasted until morning hours.
