The Memorial Service

Memorial services were held on the 9th and 40th day after the funeral as well as on the 6th and 12th month. On the eve of every memorial service the family would distribute κόλλυβα (koliva) to all homes in the village. This was a kind of invitation to attend the memorial service. After the memorial service the family would serve a meal to all the relatives who had come to offer their condolences but the meal never included meat. The amount of mourning depended on the deceased person’s age. The closest relatives and the women mourned the most. Very close relatives mourned for a year or more, while distant relatives mourned for 40 days or 6 months. If the deceased was a young man then his mother and widowed wife would never ceas to wear black.
