The Water Fountains

The fountain serves important social functions (e.g. assemblies, gatherings, customs, etc.) and acts as  a key identity symbol with vital social and cultural functions.  In most cases the fountain takes the name of the donator  but sometimes it’s named after the location where it was built. The fountains are located  throughout the settlement and serve the needs of nearby homes, especially during the winter months when adverse weather conditions prevent frequent movements.

The water fountain area is also the place where women gather. It is  the principal spot that grants women access to the public space. Apart from a meeting spot for women, the fountain is a place where magical and religious rituals take place. These are predominantly associated with the female gender. One example is the customary practice of offering gifts on the third day after the wedding.
