The people of Epirus left a strong mark on the economic development and social life of the island of Zante. Shops, import and export businesses, jewelry and grocery stores were scattered in various parts of the city and particularly in the main street of the central square. Near the market place several refugees from Epirus had opened small grocery stores, especially those from Kalarrytes. The locals would call this neighborhood “Kalarrytika” and to this name keeps the same name. The commercial businesses of refugees were primarily developed in Corfu. On their way to Europe, Corfu was the first stop after the Sagiadas port. The first cooperative of cloak makers would emerge in Corfu. Spyros Stoupis in his book entitled “Foreigners in Corfu” writes:

“We also note that the cooperatives of cloak makers or fine fur manufacturers of Corfu donated significant amounts for the preservation of the Church…”
