Oral Testimony on the Life of Builders

The builders would form a group. They were at least four because they’d work on a building inside out. The apprentices and assistants worked on the inside and the builders worked on the outside. There were also experts that carried out the stone works. They’d chisel the stones themselves even though all workmen were paid the same wages. The children started working from a very young age – as soon as they could lift a container. This depended on age and physical strength and the work lasted from one to two years. Then they’d get promoted and they’d take care of the animals and load the materials.

They were called the mule boys and consequently were obliged to transport materials and look after the animals. Perhaps the mule boy would even spend the night in a field somewhere. In fact anywhere he could find pasture land because the properties he’d work on weren’t suitable for grazing. Of course life was certainly very difficult especially in this transition period. After one or two years and depending on skills set he’d become an assistant and work on the inside of the building. Many mule boys had spent their lives working on the building’s interior because they simply weren’t capable. Such groups of workmen lasted until the 1950s.

Workmen were similar to musical bands. They’d move in groups. The earthquakes of the Ionian Islands however changed everything. They’d hire individuals as opposed to groups. The contractor would employ one builder at a time.

So workmen would go wherever they had contacts or acquaintances and they’d ask if there was any work here or in a neighboring village. So they’d carry on walking. These are people that would start from the area of Valtos and walk until Petrouli, in Thessaly. Whether it was the Turkish Occupation, or the Civil War people simply worked to eat. Their remuneration was their food or other produce. There was one year where a man and his team worked in Thessaly and the wives would collect the wheat from the area and bring it back to their village. This was their remuneration. Bread.
