Georgios Diamantis Bafas

Georgios Diamantis Bafas was born in Kalarrytes in 1784 and died in Zakynthos in 1853. He learnt the trade of silversmith from his father who had served as a goldsmith in the court of Ali Pasha. His works were created in the last decade of the 18th century and the first decade of 19th century. It took Bafas 13 years, from 1816 to 1829, to complete the silver sculpted shrine of Ayios Dionisios, in addition to its Gospel and the icon of the Patron Saint. Georgios Bafas, unlike Tzimouris, created a wide range of ecclesiastical and secular silverware. It isn’t easy to identify their precise date because it was customary for artists to put a signature on their works.
