Folk art

Folk art is a concept and creation that belongs to a world that is captive of its own space. It’s also an all even circular repetition of time due to centuries of its application [1]. The creator himself, or in other words the craftsman, enters in a direct dialectical relationship with his audience. Famous craftsmen in addition to anonymous weavers and embroiderers fully utilise and demonstrate in their crafts the region’s content and symbolic inventory which identifies the ethos, beliefs and worldview of the community in the mountainous region. Talismanic properties and elements that are meant to protect from evil are also embedded in the craft’s aesthetic and function. Renowned wood sculptors, also known as ταγιαδόροι (tagiadori), take into account features that relate to worshipers and church traditions but also include motifs of the mythical world. The cross, the cherub and seraph, and illustrative dragons are just a few of the motifs that arise from the metaphysical anguish of the people. Similar motifs are also seen on the stone carvings which one encounters on taps, beams of houses but also on built-in stones. The works of the region’s craftsmen are both known and unknown. Workshops are mobile. But always nearby one finds the craftworks of men and anonymous creations of the region’s weavers. Objects are of symbolic character but also practical in their use. To this day these objects are indicators of a distinct aesthetic that have secured an inherent value.
