P8: The Evangelistria Holy Monastery in Kipseli

At this point in the route devoted to the Virgin Mary, we leave behind us the settlement of Gouriana and continue to the Graikiko settlemement and then head toward the Kipseli settlement otherwise known as Chosepsi, where we focus on the Evangelistra Monastery. Built in the settlement’s western corner it takes around 30 minutes to get there by car. We encounter Saint Nicholas in the center of the settlement where a Monastery once operated but for which we don’t have much information on. Also, just 1.5 kilometers northeast of the settlement we encounter the Monastery of Saint Demetrios, a great Byzantine monument which dates back to the 13th or 14th century. The monument is of great interest because of its rare architectural type. This is one of the few architectural structures in the region from the famous Despotate of Epirus.

The settlement of Kipseli is amongst the liveliest settlements in the Tzoumerka region. Once again we are one step closer to reliving the place’s past, while at the same time acknowledging its presence, through the exceptional folkloric collection of Pantelis Karalis which is hosted at the Museum of Folk Art and Life. Yet, another example of the social fabric and the role of the Church’s institution is the settlement’s watermill which is located on the site of Kalloni. This property belongs to the Church and is now officially declared a monument.
