P9: The Holy Monastery of Panagia Vella in Voulgareli

The route then leads to the Red Church or otherwise known as the Panagia Vella Holy Monastery in the Voulgareli settlement, more specifically in the Palaiochori located about three kilometers south of Voulgareli. This Byzantine monument is particularly important because it is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While in Voulgareli it is also worth visiting the Monastery of Saint George located ten minutes north of the settlement. Founded in 1714 during the Ottoman period the Monastery of Saint George was an important religious and cultural center because often times it protected the local people by providing them with shelter. A memorable event was when the Germans set fire to the settlement.
