The Holy Monastery of Tsouka in Elliniko

The Monastery is built on an even hill located in an evocative natural setting and is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Its feast day is celebrated on September 8th with a number of pilgrims visiting on the day in order to honor the Virgin Mary. According to references the Monastery was founded in 1190 and possesses the characteristics of a fortress. Folk tradition tells the following story regarding this Monastery’s construction: “On the hill of Tsouka the locals found an icon of the Virgin Mary and in her honor they built a church on the hill of Saint Marina. But every night, the icon was placed on the hill of Tsouka and thiss indicated the Monastery’s building site.” The Church possibly dates back to the 17th century but the murals have suffered from the ravages of time. However, we can distinguish the figures’ reliefs. The carved mural (18th century) is exquisite, as is its flowery decor. The chapel of the Virgin Mary is located near the eastern entrance of the Monastery which sadly has been damaged due to fire.
