W2: The Holy Monastery of Saint Paraskevi in Houliarades

After Charokopi we cross through the Petrovouni settlement where we encounter the route’s next stop which is located in the Houliarades settlement. In this settlement and according to testimonials we understand that water resources are scarce. However, in the past, water supplied from the wider area covered the needs of the local people. Saint Paraskevi protected and fairly distributed the scarce water resources and so the Monastery of Saint Paraskevi is dedicated to the Saint. Evidence that demonstrates the local management of water is found in the public water fountains that are spread around the settlement such as those of Diakos, Lemonia and Ragka in addition to the wells of B. Sontis, E. Kalogiannis and A. Kalogiannis. These samples are evidence of scarce water resources and how they were publicly managed. Residents that also sought better living standards established themselves, especially during winters, near the river where they’d find better survival conditions. Other samples include the watermills of Ntrianevas and Korovesiou.

The settlement currently counts about 140 permanent residents but in the past the settlement was an important administrative center of the Tzoumerka region. The builders of this settlement were especially popular until the middle of the 20th century. Their craftiness would benefit numerous locations across Greece. The settlement of Houliarades provides us with several examples of traditional architecture such as the Vourloka Home, the Giannikosta Home, the Stamos Home, the Karakosta Home, the Tsirka Home and the Tsikou Home. In addition, the natural environment always wins the admiration of visitors. Near the settlement, behind the mountain peak of Lapata (the peak has an altitude of 1333 meters with spectacular views) we discover a perennial all-natural pine forest.
