W5: The Old Mills Complex in Syrrako

From the Palaiochori settlement we head toward the settlement of Syrrako that stands on the edge of the cliff just above the gorge. The Chrousias River flows between the settlements of Syrrako and Kalarrytes. It is also a stream that flows out of the Kallarytikos River. The visitor then follows the old path that connects the two settlements. This is a difficult hiking trail that lasts about 1.5 hours. Along the way you can visit a complex of old mills as well as wonderful waterfalls. This is a route that appeals to the adventurous type with steep spots and up-hills. Upon entering the settlement and while walking the cobblestone bridges on the Siopoto site, we encounter one more restored watermill. A little further, there is a lovely square with maple trees. On the Goura site we find a central fountain with an arched roof made with a special kind of stone. Its location and evidence from oral traditions demonstrate that surely this fountain was once the central focus of the settlement. According to tradition, an icon of Saint Nicholas was encountered in this particular water source. The Church in the central square exists since the 17th century and is devoted to Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint and Protector of the settlement as well as the Protector of Emigrants. In Syrrako we encounter remarkable samples of local architecture. One of these is the Museum of Kostas Avdikos which was once the home of his granddaughter Erminia Photiadou. She was a folklorist herself and donated her mansion to the community. Today it houses a remarkable collection of folk art. In addition, the home of poet Kostas Krystallis has been converted into the Museum of Kostas Krystallis and exhibits personal objects, objects used by residents in their daily lives and operates as a library. The boarding house next to Saint Nicholas Church as well as the Old School nearby now operate as a guest house and are also considered amazing architectural highlights.
