W16: Saint Paraskevi Church in Patero, Fortosi

Our last stop prior to returning to Ioannina is the settlement of Fortosi where there are four stone built wells. It also includes the smaller settlement of Patero. Here, aside from two stone wells, we encounter the Old Holy Church of Saint Paraskevi. At the end of this route we have understood and partly experienced thus far the importance of water distribution in the everyday life of the local population including their commercial activities and transportation, domestic livestock and craft making. We come to comprehend the reasons why these settlements strongly supported their rights to exploit the bridges or watermills which were mostly built on boundary zones. While this usually caused conflicts and disputes among locals, Saint Paraskevi sanctified the place and ensured a fair distribution of its waters in order to secure livelihood in the mountains. So we return to Ioannina.

We recommend that the visitor completes the route in two to four days. In most settlements on route one can find hospitable accommodation and local food made from local ingredients.
