The Church of Saint Paraskevi in Matsouki

It’s the oldest Parish Church and is located in the settlement’s central square. The date 1719 is engraved on two bronze candelabras. S. Ksenopoulos informs us that in 1884 the inhabitants of Matsouki “some 150 years ago built the Church of Agia Paraskevi.” Therefore in 1884 its structure was the same as in 1734. The Church is a basilica without a dome. In the southern section it features a loggia and there is a belfry over the west entrance. Because of its location, over time, the Church suffered enough damage that led to repeated repairs. In 1981 the Church was assessed unsafe because of a crack that would eventually lead to its demolition in March of 1986. The new Parish Church would then be erected on 16/08/1988 in the courtyard of the primary school, located southwest of the settlement. Nevertheless the residents refer to the site of the former church when articulating their thoughts and memories. This Church gradually evolved as a point of auto-reference for the community. It seems to reinforce its collective consciousness and is referred to as the settlement’s entrance point which also acts as a symbolic boundary.
