The Monastery of Saint George in Voulgareli

The Monastery of Saint George is built on the northern tip of the Voulgareli community. It was established in the early 18th century. According to the inscription found above the nave’s door that leads to the narthex, the nave’s murals date back to 1714. The compositions are attributed to artists from Kalarrytes and exhibit a familiar zone-like arrangement in both the nave and the narthex. Among the Monastery’s relics a silver shrine created by a silversmith from Kalarrytes stands out. In this Monastery and according to tradition the region’s leaders, led by Georgios Karaiskakis, raised the revolution’s flag.
