Oral Testimony on the μαχούστι (animal fairs) of Plaka

A significant event  was the feast day of the Monastery in Mouchousti which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The celebration took place on the 8th of September and was known as Χτωήμερο (Chtoimero, because it lasted eight days). Back then and up until 1912, the Plaka settlement, the Bridge and the Monastery were the focal points of the area hence the eight day festival. Big and small merchants sold bronze items, traditional footwear known as τσαρούχια (tsarouchia), traditional garments for men known as φουστανέλες (foustaneles), wool, bonnets, fabrics and other goods. In the same area, there was a spot called Pouliana. This is where the animal trade took place.
