Crafts and handmade structures

no images were found

The term “handmade structures” describes all infrastructure that is necessary for the primary and secondary processing of raw materials in order to meet the household’s needs (e.g. mills) as well as commercial needs (e.g. fulling mills and water basins). In Tzoumerka’s voluminous region agriculture and livestock production were supplemented with the making of domestic crafts. This developed an entire infrastructure which was operated by individuals or as a community scheme. There are also foundations and buildings which are under the jurisdiction of Monasteries but today few of these structures are still standing and in several settlements these are completely in disuse. However some have been restored or rebuilt on the same spot in order to promote Tzoumerka’s crafts and handmade creations as attractive tourist sites.

The Architect Engineer Mr. Vasilis Kaskani presented “The watermill at the Holy Monastery of Vyliza in Matsouki near Ioannina” at the scientific conference “Research, Promotion and Cultural Management of small-scale habitats. The example of the mountainous culture of Tzoumerka (15th-20th century).” The presentation, in Greek, is available here
